This is the day on which we have collectively demanded more from the earth than it can regenerate in an entire year. Every year this day seems to come a bit earlier, a silent witness to our ongoing plunder of our planet. If we all lived like the average Dutch person, we would need not one, but four Earths to sustain our lifestyle. The calculation of Earth Overshoot Day is carried out annually by the Global Footprint Network, an organization that monitors the consumption of natural resources. Their analyses show that the Dutch could reduce their "ecological footprint" by 44% through current measures. This is an encouraging start, but there is still a long way to go.

By switching to renewable energy sources, reducing our dependence on non-renewable resources, and by embracing a circular economy, we can change the direction in which we are moving.
