What should I look out for in a Logo

A logo, nowadays it is almost a requirement to have one. But what should you look out for when you are having one made or going to make one yourself?

First, a quick note beforehand. The most important thing is not just to have a logo, but rather you need a strong corporate identity. A corporate identity is much broader than just a logo. I always like to view a corporate identity as a Carpenter's toolbox. It contains all the important things that a Carpenter needs.

For instance, you need a Hammer (your brand colors), but a saw (the Logo) is also important, but where are you going to store everything? So you also need a bag (The core values, mission, and vision of the company). I think you understand where I am going with this.

Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)

You might already know this term, but I would still like to explain it. A logo must be as simple as possible. Not too difficult and without too much fuss. You should actually be able to see at a single glance what it is all about. It shouldn't look too complicated either. Because why would you create an extremely complex logo. That is not scalable and usually not timeless either.

Scalable

And that brings you straight to point two. A good logo is scalable. Indeed, you need to be able to use it on both small and large surfaces. Next to this, I have a few examples of large companies that are a perfect example in this area. The logos are not only scalable but also timeless and original.

Timeless

You don't design a logo just for a short while. But often for a long period. Think about 10 or 20 years. And actually, logos should be able to last even longer. Therefore, it is of crucial importance that the logo is so timeless that it could have been used in 1734 and will still be up-to-date in 2053.

Recognizable

One of the most important aspects we believe is that it must be recognizable. So the logo has to stick in your mind within three minutes. You must be able to recognize it everywhere. If I ask you right now what the Microsoft logo looks like, or that of the NS (Dutch Railways).

Adaptable

With a logo, it is important that you can use it in many colors. An unspoken rule is that every logo must also be clear and visible in 100% black (so no shades of grey). Many designers still tend to forget this. That is why it is incredibly important to take this into account as a Designer or Client.

Fitting

And finally, a logo must truly fit the target group for whom the logo is intended. That is why we really sit down and talk with our partners. Because we genuinely want to know who the final result is intended for.

These were already the most important ones! There are a few others that are slightly less important and not entirely of this day and age anymore. Part two will follow soon!
